This type of ebru is created by applying paints to the tray with a brush, without using tools like combs or awls. It is the oldest known type of ebru, and battal ebru made using this method is called Tarz-ı Kadim (old style) battal ebru. This is because battal ebru has been created in various other styles over time. Applying the paints to the tray with a brush may seem easy, but it is not as easy as it looks and requires skill. The mastery of the ebru artist is evident in their battal ebru. As the late Mustafa Düzgünman stated, "Battal Ebru is the first school of ebru." There are different types, such as Somaki battal, Neftli battal, and Serpmeli battal.
