He was born in Kütahya in 1947. He learned the art of ceramics, which he has been practicing for over half a century, from his father through a master-apprentice relationship.

He carried out all his work by drawing original designs and also implemented the designs he created for his ceramics himself.

Üstünkaya, whose works have received various awards, contributed to the development of ceramics by teaching the new techniques he developed to many people. The artist, who passed away in 2025, left behind a limited number of works.
